George Barbier: Sexy Flamboyant Art Deco

George Barnier, makes me smile. His style is dripping with the 1920's and the mood is so subtle and his characters over the top, I giggle at his stuff everytime I see it. It's super entertaining to me, and the body positions, fashions, and compositions are amazing. He's simple and powerful; not an easy combonation to pull off. This old style has alot of genuien charm, and I think it wouldn't hurt to begin mixing this style in today's pallet.

I couldn't find a real solid gallery or any site dedicated to George Barbier entirely, (maybe I need to make him one,) so I'm posting a few different sites. (These links will open in a new window)

I realize these artist may not blow everyone's hair back like they did mine, and so feedback to this post will prevent or encourage similar artist in the future. But a little diversity never hurt anybody.

George Barbier (1882 - 1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes France on October 10, 1882, Barbier was 29 years old when he mounted his first exhibition in 1911 and was subsequently swept to the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theatre and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts who were nicknamed by Vogue Magazine as "The Knights of the Bracelet" - a tribute to their fashionable and flamboyant mannerisms and style of dress. New Wallpaper: "Victor"

Here's a recent wallpaper I designed. Its roughly based on a comic I wanna create, which revolves around this guy "Victor". He's a chubby Mexican soccer enthusiast who enjoys BBQ and naps in his hammock. Although he does has the ability to turn his arms into tenitcles. His villans will have similar abilites related to Lobsters, and Jelly-Fish. I'm still fleshing out the plot, but its just a fun little comic idea I'm toying around with. Eric White: And a Dash of Fine Art

Eric's "Hyper -Real" art is full of distortions and exploration of color. He's a little more formal, polished, and traditional in his approuch than other artist featured on this blog so far, but his stuff is still original. He works alot from photographs and he has somehow managed to paint them so well that it not only looks real but you can tell its a painting of a photograph, he captures the colors. texture, and vibe a photograph puts off with his paints. Weird. Anyway I'm probably not making sense, just scope it out. link

Stephen Wiltshire: autistic, artistic, savant

I've always been interested in autistic savants, especially artistic ones. I've read about musical savants who can sit down and play on a piano any melody/song/composition they've just heard verbatim. And as far as visual artist savants go I haven't been able to find much. There was some articles about a young girl who could draw a perfectly proportional horse and rider at like age 5 or somehting from memory, and she'd start with the horse's feet not the rider's head, and she wouldn't do any type of plotting out of the composition or anything. Pretty wild.

Now check out this guy Stephen Wiltshire. I'd love to see a panoramic photo placed above his drawing just to be able to compare.

Experimenting with H2O color

A recent experiment with water color. I just painted on some old construction paper, so it warped and rippled alot. Not a very good scan job either. But you get the idea.

The Style of Marco Cibola

Marco's an illustrator and a designer. He's the prefect mix, on one hand he's got an amazing personalized illustrative style, and on the other hand he can do legit, official, slick business web design with just the right amount of his creative flair without bothering the client. All in all a pretty versatile and talented desinger/illustrator. Be sure and check out both his design and illustration work link
